Khan Market: The Shortest Walk
Khan Market station is underground and has four exits. You want Gate 1, which leads to Shahjahan Road, the UPSC building at Dholpur House, and R.S. Junior Modern School. The other three gates go to Pandara Road and Golf Links (Gate 2), Lodhi Road and The Ambassador Hotel (Gate 3), and the Khan Market shopping area and Lok Nayak Bhawan (Gate 4). If you come out of the wrong one, you’ll spend a few minutes getting back to the right road.
From Gate 1, head north along Shahjahan Road. It’s one of central Delhi’s wide, tree-lined avenues, with bungalows behind walls and not many shops. The road ends at the C-Hexagon, and India Gate stands right in front of you. The route is simple, and the footpath is in reasonable condition by Delhi standards.
Khan Market works best if:

It has five exits, and Gate 3 is the one signposted for India Gate and Boat Club. Gate 4 leads to Vijay Chowk, which is useful if you want to start by looking up Raisina Hill towards Rashtrapati Bhavan before walking east.
The route from Gate 3 is about 2 km, walking along the redeveloped Kartavya Path with India Gate ahead of you the whole way. It isn’t the fastest way to get there, but it’s the most enjoyable. You’ll pass the canals and lawns, the new pedestrian paths and the vending plazas, and see the government buildings behind you. Take this route in the late afternoon and you’ll reach India Gate as the lights come on.

In July 2026, sixteen stations, including Central Secretariat, Khan Market and Mandi House, were closed for security reasons. Trains still passed through, and passengers could change lines at the interchanges.

Walking Around the C-Hexagon: Practical Notes
- Cross only at signals and marked crossings. The C-Hexagon is a fast, multi-lane road circling the monument, and traffic doesn’t slow down for pedestrians.
- The National War Memorial is just east of India Gate, and many visitors combine the two. It has its own opening hours and a security check, unlike the open lawns around India Gate.
- Carry water in summer. There’s little shade along both Shahjahan Road and Kartavya Path in the middle of the day, and temperatures can go past 40°C from May to June.
- Winter evenings (December–January) can bring heavy smog. On poor air-quality days, take a cab from the metro instead of walking.
